10 Daily Habits That Changed My Life Completely

After years of dealing with debilitating diseases like severe eczema, insomnia, nosebleeds, anxiety, depression, and PTSD, in 2015 I decided to get to the root cause of my chronic health issues, and took the first steps to heal my mind & body from the inside out.

I signed up for Elwin Robinson's Complete Detox Academy and started with my first detox. 3 years later now, I’ve gone through several detoxes, switched to a whole food plant-based diet, and completely turned my life around by incorporating positive lifestyle changes.

Today, I’m happier and healthier than I’ve ever been, and my passion for natural health grows every day. Through writing and personal coaching, I wish to inspire change and transformation in people who are looking for sustainable solutions to their health challenges.

Here’s a list I compiled for you with 10 lifestyle changes that completely changed my life. I hope they may inspire you in some way ♥

1. Shifting my mindset: taking my life into my own hands

One thing I’ve really learnt over the past few years, is that life is not what happens to us. It is what we make of it.

Do you already have a gratitude practice? Thinking about the things you’re grateful for every day, helps to retrain your brain and shift your mindset from hardship and lack to gratitude and abundance. Just this one exercise has made me view life with completely different eyes. I feel more grateful, open, confident, positive, and compassionate.

Every couple of months, I write down a list of positive affirmations which I repeat every day. I think of the things I’d like to feel, achieve, and embody in the next couple of months, and I write them in the present tense, as if I’ve already achieved them in the future. Your mind will then start to make new connections and look out for ways to achieve your goals, and you will naturally adjust your habits accordingly! Just this practice has helped me achieve almost any goal I set for myself:

* Clear up my eczema

* Recover from Epstein-Barr

* Heal from chronic headaches, nosebleeds, depression, anxiety, panic attacks

* Sleep through the night and wake up early with great energy

* Have steady energy throughout the day

* Align my actions with my intentions

* Create loving and compassionate relationships

* Be more confident & let go of fear of failure

* Protect my energy in stressful situations

2. Fresh, raw, ripe, organic whole plant foods

Fresh organic fruits and vegetables are packed with life-giving nutrients like vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and phytonutrients that will help improve your digestion and give you vibrant energy. Try starting your day with a green smoothie, snack on fruit, and build your meals around vegetables. Try adding in some leafy greens too — they help remineralize tissue and will help your body with detoxification.

3. Having a morning routine

Every day I wake up around 7am, I have a tall glass of lemon water, followed by a green juice and a smoothie. My healthy morning routine helps me set the tone for the rest of the day with minimum effort.

Waking up every day around the same time helps you establish a biorhythm, creating more hormonal balance — ie. you’ll feel more stable energy throughout the day and you will find it much easier to relax in the evening, too.

4. Having an evening routine

Establishing an evening routine that works for you, helps promote a healthy sleep. For example, every day I have dinner around the same time, then I do a calming activity like journaling, reading, or some kind of light exercise before I finally get ready for bed. This has been a huge game changer for my sleep quality, as it signals my brain it’s time to sleep at the same time every day — without me having to put in any effort!

5. Daily detox practices: keeping my 4 exits clear

This is a huge one. Learning these basic detox practices has absolutely turned my life around. Basically, you want to make sure your 4 exits are clear at all times, so that toxins can move out of your body safely and effectively:

  • Lungs: diaphragmatic breathing, breathing fresh air, having a relaxed posture, regular aerobic exercise, chest-opening exercises
  • Skin: hot magnesium baths, switching between hot & cold showers, saunas, massage, grounding in nature, sun exposure, avoiding contact with toxins
  • Bladder: start your day with lemon water + green juice, drink a tall glass of water 20 minutes before each meal, avoid tap water & drink fresh spring water, eat more fresh raw fruits & vegetables, avoid white table salt & switch to raw celtic salt instead
  • Large intestine: make sure you have at least 2 bowel movements per day by drinking enough water, consuming more magnesium, pro- and prebiotics, eating more whole plant foods, and moving your body

6. Engaging in community

When I was feeling sick and depressed, I felt detached and had a hard time being around people. But as I shifted my perspective and started opening up, I started looking for online communities of people who had been through the same thing and came out the other end successfully. Feeling like you belong, and being surrounded by people who ‘get you’, and who inspire and motivate you, is key when you’re trying to make changes in your life.

7. Finding my way to deal with stressful situations

I used to be highly reactive whenever I found myself in a stressful situation. But step by step, I broke down my walls of defense and rebuilt them with healthy boundaries. I strengthen my confidence daily with positive affirmations, gratitude practices, self-help books, and inspiring podcasts.

When I now find myself in a stressful situation, I have a place of inner peace where I can recenter myself. When a situation is challenging, instead of perceiving it as a problem, I see it as an experience. I breathe into it, I allow myself to feel it, and see it as a challenge, an opportunity to learn and evolve. This helps me to detach from the harsh impact feelings like anger or hurt would otherwise have on me.

8. Reconnecting with nature

We all have experienced the healing power of nature before, but it’s good to be reminded every once in a while :) Walking barefoot on the grass, feeling the sunshine on your skin, going for a walk in the forest, breathing fresh air, sitting near a stream… Whenever you start to feel disconnected, reconnect.

9. Getting into my body

Getting into your body and making time to connect with your physical sensations is one of the most powerful things you can do to decrease anxiety, tension and stuck (emotional) pain. Dance, stretch, breathe, jump, walk, run, do yoga… Whatever gets you excited!

10. Creative expression

I’ve always loved to write, to take pictures, and to dance, and especially the unique sense of freedom those activities bring along. I think expressing yourself creatively is such a vital part of who we are as human beings. It’s one of the most amazing ways to get in your flow and shine your light.

We’re quick to put our creative ideas at the bottom of our to-do list, but I think it’s time to re-prioritize creativity as it’s one of the most healing ways to work through anything where you feel stuck.
